This week’s edition of CLASSICAL GUITAR ALIVE! is titled “Pictures and Portraits”, and features an interview with the great Scottish guitarist David Russell, who speaks about his early childhood, and traveling across Southern Europe with his parents, both artistic painters.

The program begins with Japanese super-virtuoso Kazuhito Yamashita’s stunning and controversial 1981 recording of his solo guitar arrangement of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”. Leo Brouwer’s two movement piece “Catalan Portraits” for guitar and chamber orchestra depicts two of Catalonia’s greatest artists: composer Federico Mompou (1893-1987), and architect Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926), and uses quotes from two Catalan folksongs: “El Mestre”, (the teacher), “El Noi de la Mare” (The Son of the Mother). In this interview recorded October 2002, David Russell tells of leaving Scotland at age 6 and traveling by van across Southern France and Spain with his parents, both artistic painters who favored works by impressionist painters, such as Van Gogh.

The program concludes with Enrique Granados’ (1867-1916) music inspired by the subject of two of Francisco de Goya’s (1746-1828) paintings, “La Maja”, reputed to be the Duchess of Alba.
