April 12, 2006 "Three Sacred Works"
<Listen Online Now>

This week's edition of Classical Guitar Alive! features sacred works by Camilla de Rossi, Alan Hovhaness, and Vicente Asencio. The program begins with the Sinfonia from the oratorio, "The Sacrifice of Abraham", by the 18th Century composer Camilla de Rossi. Commissioned by the Armenian church, Alan Hovhaness composed his "Mystery of the Holy Martyrs" op. 251, subtitled 'Seventeen Prayers for Oud, lute, or Guitar and String Quartet or String Orchestra,'in 1976. The piece refers to attempt by Persia to wipe out Christianity in Armenia in 451 AD. The deaths of 1000+ Armenian Christians strengthened and unified the Armenian church. The program concludes with Spanish composer Vicente Asencios' "Mystic Suite" for solo guitar. The titles of the three movements are "Gesthemany", "Thirst", and "Pentecost." "Thirst" was commissioned by the Nation Radio of Spain for Holy Week in 1971. Andres Segovia later asked Asencio to compose a suite based on "Thirst".
