CLOSING THEME/FUNDING CREDITS

-----------------------------------------------------------

This week's edition of CLASSICAL GUITAR ALIVE! is titled "Family Portraits", and features musical portraits of all kinds and a 2015 interview with guitarist-composer Mark Cruz, who talks about his piece "Family Portrait," and an interview with the Grammy-winning Scottish guitarist David Russell, who speaks about his early childhood, and traveling across Southern Europe with his parents, both artistic painters.

The program begins with excerpts from Peruvian super-virtuoso Jorge Caballero’s 2015 recording of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition".

Leo Brouwer's two movement piece "Catalan Portraits" for guitar and chamber orchestra depicts two of Catalonia's greatest artists: composer Federico Mompou (1893-1987), and architect Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926), and uses quotes from two Catalan folksongs: "El Mestre", (the teacher), "El Noi de la Mare" (The Son of the Mother).

In an interview recorded in August 2015, composer-guitarist Mark Cruz speaks about his piece "Family Portrait," which is a musical portrait of his own family.

In an October 2002 interview, David Russell tells of leaving Scotland at age 6 and traveling by van across Southern France and Spain with his parents, both artistic painters who favored works by impressionist painters, such as Van Gogh.

The program concludes with Enrique Granados' (1867-1916) music inspired by the subject of two of Francisco de Goya's (1746-1828) paintings, "La Maja", reputed to be the Duchess of Alba.
