This week’s edition of Classical Guitar Alive! features 2010 interviews with James Russo, press officer at the US Embassy in Asuncion, Paraguay, and Brasil Guitar Duo members Douglas Lora and Joao Luiz.

The program begins with Greek guitarist Smaro Gredoriado performing Scarlatti Sonata K380/L23 on an unusual, metal-strung, high-pitched guitar designed by Yorgos Kertsopopulous.

The Canadian Guitar Quartet performs their virtuosic arrangement of Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances.”

Brazilian composer Radames Gnattali composed his “Retratos (Portrait) Suite” for two guitars. Each of the 4 movements is titles after a Brazilian composer. Anacleto de Medeiros was a successful composer and influential band director/music educator. Guitarist Petar Jankovic performs an arrangement for guitar and string quartet.

18-year-old Japanese bandoneon virtuoso Kazumi Miura performs Piazzolla’s “Tango Suite” with guitarist Yasuji Ohagi.

In an interview recorded 2010, US Embassy in Paraguay Press Officer James Russo gives and overview of Paraguay, its history, and its love of music and the arts.

Winners of the prestigious Concert Artists Guild, the Brasil Guitar Duo’s Douglas Lora and Joao Luiz speak about the support both their parents gave their early musical education. The program concludes with their 2010 performance at the 30th Anniversary Omni Foundation concert series in San Frandisco, Richard Patterson, Executive Director.
