November 10, 2010 "Philip Hii, Jose Luis Merlin Interviews"
This week’s program features interviews with Malaysian-born virtuoso and respected pedagogue Philip Hii, and the popular Argentine guitarist/composer Jose Luis Merlin. The program begins with Germany’s Amadeus Duo’s (Dale Kavanagh and Thomas Kirchhoff) arrangement of Handel’s Chaconne in G, HV435. In an interview taped in April of 2004, Philip Hii discusses his latest Guitar Solo Publications’ CD and the allure of Chopin’s Nocturnes. The program continues with up-and-coming young Korean virtuoso Rosa Hyewon Lee’s beautiful recording of Manuel Ponce’s Sonata III for solo guitar. The life and work of French guitar composer Antoine de Lhoyer (1768-1852) are only now beginning to be widely known. L’hoyer was a military man who fought against the French Revolution, obtained a court position in St. Petersburg, and died in Paris at the age of 84. Argentine guitarist-composer Jose Luis Merlin discusses the different rhythmic forms of Argentine music, in an interview taped in October of 2004. The program concludes with his Madrid-based flute/oboe/guitar/cello chamber music group, Cuarteto HispanoAmerica performing his very popular work, “Progressiones para Pauline.” Public Radio Satellite System uplink:Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 1300 Eastern Time Program ID# 10-D65-00045 Title: Phillip Hi, Jose Luis Merlin Interviews In Cue: MUSIC IN "Hello and welcome to.."
