March 25, 2009 "Australian Composers"
<Listen to Preview>

This week's program features music by Australian composers: Philip Houghton, Nigel Westlake, Richard Lenz, and John Williams.

The program begins with the three movement work "Opals" for four guitars by Phillip Houghton. Originally trained as an artist, Houghton began formal music studies at age 20, but was self-taught on guitar beginning at age 9.

Nigel Westlake is one of Australia's leading film composers. His award-winning score to a film on Antarctica has been adapted into a suite from music from the film.

Richard Lenz is a guitarist-composer who performs in Duo Lenz with Ruth Lenz. Three movements from his Summer Solstice are heard here.

Best known as one of the world's leading classical guitarists, John Williams had an unexpected "hit" with his Aeolian Suite for guitar and orchestra in 1998. The work is based on several Medieval Italian tunes and original music.
