March 27, 2007 "New Releases/Patrick Francis Interview"
<Listen Online Now>

This week's program features music from some of the best recent CD releases, and an interview with Patrick Francis of the San Francisco Guitar Quartet. The program begins with a two guitar arrangement of three sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti K37, K8, K12 performed by Canada's HK Duo- Drew Henderson and Michael Kolk.

In a recent interview, San Francisco Guitar Quartet member Patrick Francis praises the work of Oregon composer Bryan Johanson, and discusses the Copland-esque compositional style of his "Toccata" for 4 guitars.

Excerpts from Jerry Owen's "Gypsy Inspirations" for flute, viola, and guitar are performed by Iowa's Red Cedar Trio. Composed in 2003, the work is based on traditional Roma musical traits.

The recently-released debut CD by the Providence, Rhode Island-based guitar duo of Mark and Beverly Davis features their original transcription of Ernesto Halfter (b. 1905)Ős quasi-Baroque "Danza de la Pastora."

Each year the Guitar Foundation of America hosts a solo guitar competition, and Montreal guitarist Jerome Ducharme was the 2005 winner. Part of the competition requirements include mandatory pieces that each competitor must play, including a set piece composed just for the competition. San Antonio composer Matthew Dunne's "Appalachian Summer" was the set piece for the 2005 GFA competition.

From the best-selling "Grace Like a River" EMI cd, the program concludes with an archival live recording of the final movement of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's "Guitar Concerto #1 in D", performed by a 15-year-old Christopher Parkening and the Young Musicians Foundation Orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Klein.
