This week's edition of Classical Guitar Alive! explores the exciting world of flamenco guitar, with excerpts of interviews with some of the world's greatest flamenco guitarists including Paco De Lucia, Juan Martin, Los Romeros, Dennis Koster, and a live studio performance/demonstration by the great Dutch guitarist Teye.
The flamenco guitar began as an accompanying instrument to singers & dancers. From an intense live recording, Paco Pena and his group perform a traditional ensemble piece, Giralda de Sevilla. Solo flamenco guitar is relatively new, and only became popularized in the early 1900s due to artists such as Ramon Montoya and Nino Ricardo. One of Spain's most respected flamenco guitar virtuosos, Victor Monge, a.k.a "Serranito", performs a Bulerias titled "Fiesta en Jerez."
In addition to virtuosity, "aire", or atmosphere, or mood, is an essential ingredient to flamenco. Spanish guitarist Juan Martin discusses how technical perfection is less important than emotion in flamenco.
Flamenco developed in Andalucia in southern Spain, primarily through the influence of gypsies, but there are also middle eastern Arabic and Jewish musical influences. These latter influences are especially heard in Galicia Flamenca by guitarist Gino D'Auri and cellist David Darling.
In a live studio performance/interview, the great Dutch-born flamenco guitarist Teye and the members of his group "Viva Flamenca", demonstrate the differences between the various stylized forms found in flamenco, including the "soleares", the "Bulerias", the "Alegrias", and more, in this blazing live studio performance!
In another interview, the world's premier flamenco guitarist, Paco De Lucia, tells of his past struggles with the flamenco purists, his trio, and the differences between flamenco and classical guitar. This is followed by his solo performance of Alegrias.
Xesus Pimentel & Marcos Teira, the spirited young duo known as Pimenteira, perform Asier.
Celedonio Romero's Concierto de Malaga is based on flamenco forms, including the final movement, featuring his son Pepe., Celin, Celedonio, and pepe Romero discuss the importance of flamenco to them as classical guitarists.
The program concludes with an interview and blistering live performance by Dennis Koster, who discusses the state of the art of flamenco today.
