February 6, 2007 "Two Concerto Premieres"
<Listen Online Now>

This week's edition of Classical Guitar Alive! features two world premiere guitar concerto recordings.

The Guitar Concerto op. 325 by prolific Armenian-American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) was commissioned by and dedicated to the Bolivian-born guitarist Javier Calderon in 1979. Javier Calderon performed the world premiere of the concerto with the Minnesota Orchestra in the Summer of 1979. This Naxos CD by guitarist David Leisner and the Berline Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gerard recording is the first commercially-available recording of the piece.

Puerto Rican composer Ernesto Cordero (b. 1946) wrote his "Concierto Festivo" in 2003 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the University of Puerto Rico.
