January 30, 2007 "Arrangements/Parkening, Assad Interviews"
<Listen Online Now>

This week's edition of Classical Guitar Alive! features musical arrangements and interviews with Christopher Parkening and Sergio Assad.

The program begins with a twice-arranged piece. William Byrd (1543-1623) arranged the popular Elizabethan English song "Woods so Wild" as a set of virtuoso variations for keyboard. Lutenist Francis Cutting (1571-1596) made a lute arrangement of Byrd's setting.

Due to challenges of range and texture, the piano sonatas of Haydn (1732-1809) had been largely been ignored by guitarist-arrangers. Paul Galbraith's 8-string guitar, with its extended range bass and treble range, opens many new possibilities of repertoire.

In an interview with Christopher Parkening, he explains working with Hollywood composer/arranger/orchestrator Patrick Russ, and his arrangement for guitar and strings of Peter Warlock's (1894-1930) "Capriol Suite," a work originally for string orchestra alone.

Argentine composer-pianist Carlos Guastavino's (1912-2000) style has been called "Romantic Argentine Nationalism." The Two Romances arranged here by the Santa Fe Guitar Quartet are from a set of Three Romances originally composed for piano duo.

The program concludes with an interview and Piazzolla's "Tango Suite" arranged by Sergio Assad to include cellist Yo-yo Ma. Piazzolla composed the three movement work to the Assad Guitar Duo in 1983-84. "Arrangement" is a less accurate term, as Sergio Assad entirely composed the cello line, after listening to and arranging Piazzolla's music for 20 years.
